It is well and truly 2019 and all of the January bangers are making their way onto our playlists. And, if 2019 continues this way, it’s going to be one heck of a playlist by the end of the year…
Featured Song: Ariana Grande – 7 Rings
Ariana’s follow-up to 'Thank u, next' - Imagine’ – didn’t quite blow up in the way everyone thought it would; but that’s fine because she has a new single which is going to be MASSIVE. You know how we know it’s going to be massive? Because it samples The Sound of Music! It’s, surprisingly, a rarely sampled track… last sampled in 2012 by Cyhi Da Prynce and before then by Alice Cooper in 1971.
Anyway, the track sees Ariana doing that rap-singing she’s been up to lately, talking about how “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it”. Not a very financially mature way of doing things, but we appreciate her honesty. Seriously though – it’s a BOP. And the opening few bars are sampled at the start of the ‘Thank u, next’ video! It’s all coming together! We’re excited!

Sigrid – Don’t Feel Like Crying: Next bop-o’clock comes from Sigrid! With her debut album coming out next month, she had to release another BIG track didn’t she?! Well, she picked well. There’s an orchestral section which is new levels of Gucci for the pop star and, overall, it’s an upbeat pop masterpiece which is going to become a Bar Mitzvah staple. We’re sure of it.
Mabel – Don’t Call Me Up: Following from the success of her Jax Jones collaboration ‘Ring Ring’, it turns out her ex still hasn’t got the message because Mabel is telling him once again to not call her up! Well, if such phone troubles inspire such good music, then we think he should keep doing it. This is definitely Mabel’s most pop effort to date, and she sounds good for it!
Dean Lewis – 7 Minutes: This Australian superstar, best known for his single ‘Be Alright’ has released a song destined to be another global smash. Slightly less depressing than his previous single (with more oomph in the instrument department), ‘7 Minutes’ is the sort of heartbreak song which you can dance to! The line “I forgot to love you” reminds us of the Suite Life of Zach & Cody scene where Cody is asked how you lose a woman, and he answers “you forget to love her”. Anyway….
Maren Morris – GIRL: The first new music we’ve heard from Maren since her 2017 debut album ‘HERO’ (featuring the Grammy nominated ‘My Church’) and this is a bit different! But very good! We love Maren Morris and all of the empowerment her music is filled with; her country roots, pop ambitions and self-assured nature blend together very well in ‘GIRL’.
It turns out her ex still hasn’t got the message because Mabel is telling him once again to not call her up!
OK, you want more?
YUNGBLUD – Loner: Just an absolutely SMASH! We’ve been fans of Yungblud for a minute but ‘Loner’ is our favourite song by him by a mile. It’s got all the angst we have come to expect from Dom, only with a hugely catchy chorus. He is destined for Stadium status!
Why Don’t We – BIG PLANS: The first new music from Why Don’t We since last year’s ‘8 Letters’. It’s a bit more mature than hit singles ‘Hooked’, ‘Trust Fund Baby’ and ‘These Girls’ and, other than that, there’s not much to say! It’s a good song! Enjoy it!
Alice Chater – Thief: How does she even reach those notes?! We’ve loved Alice since single one and this is her best song yet. One note: When she says she’s “falling for a thief” we hope she knows that she has a civic obligation to report this to the authorities. Thanks.
