When Molly Hocking won The Voice UK in 2019, she had no idea what might happen next.
She knew she had a label deal waiting for her (at the top-of-their game Polydor Records, home to the likes of The 1975 and Billie Eilish), and that she might have a bit of a fan base now, after all nearly 5M people across the UK watched her be crowned the winner. But other than that, where do you start?
The answer was sessions, and lots of them. Trying to find the “hit” that would keep her buzzing fan base excited and help turn new listeners into fans… and then, well we know what happened next. Insert: Global pandemic, moving back home to Cornwall and having her first single scrapped at the last minute. 2020 hasn’t been the year anybody expected it to be.
Molly Hocking did the only thing she knew how. She spoke about what she knew and released a song that tells the story of her real-life experiences. And, so, “After The Night Before” was born. The tale of a love which fizzles out, no matter how hard you try, the song speaks to Molly’s truth… even if it is humbler than her stories of supporting Celine Dion at a sold-out Hyde Park in London.
James Gilmore sat down with Molly Hocking to talk about her big TV victory, eating Pick-N-Mix before supporting music royalty and her debut single.
