It can’t be easy to open for a musical powerhouse such as Ellie Goulding, whose vocals are recognisable from a mile away. Luckily for attendees at the first night of the Apple Music Festival, the genius’ found a match.

Andra Day is an American R&B singer who’s vocals could be compared to as a mix of Amy Winehouse and Adele. Yes, it’s large praise but she has a voice which deserves it.

Powering through a setlist comprised entirely of her own tunes, Andra opens with slow ballad ‘Gold’, almost unfitting seeing as the slowly forming crowd are looking for a more upbeat vibe to kick off their Saturday night.

The set starts to pick up more half way through, with soulful tracks ‘Honey Or Fire’ and ‘Rise Up’, the latter especially receives a positive reaction from the crowd.

Taking over the Roundhouse with a loud voice filled with passion, Andra Day wins over the crowd by the end, finishing with track ‘City Burns’ which leaves the audience asking for more.

A stylistic, showful performance for the first artist to grace the stage at the Apple Music Festival - if highlights from her performance, such as ‘City Burns’ are anything to go by, Andra Day is one to look out for.
