Hyer's Highlights: First Past The Post Has To Go

In recent years, smaller parties have played a huge role in British politics.

The Liberal Democrats were in a government coalition for five years, the SNP successfully fought for a Scottish Independence Referendum in 2014, and UKIP drove the campaign for Brexit last year. Even the DUP will have significant influence in months to come as they prop up May’s Tory minority.

But with over 80% of people voting for Conservatives or Labour in this election, we are re-entering two-party politics.

Benji Hyer replied to listener Stephen who feels that this is down to our unfair First-Past-The-Post voting system.

Hyer's Highlights: Youth Turnout

What went wrong for the Conservatives?

Was it the poor campaign, with May’s enclosed approach under fire in particular for bottling it in crucial moments by not turning up to debates or connecting with the public? The un-cheery and depressing manifesto, the social care policy punishing their core voting bloc of the elderly, or its u-turns?

Did May lean too far to right, focusing on UKIP voters and not engaging with the 48% who wanted Remain? Did the terrorist attacks play a part, unveiling the truth about her drastic police cuts whilst in the Home Office?

Or was this all a backlash against her calling an early election and against a hard Brexit?

Listener Max felt it could be because the Tories ignored the youth vote, but he argues that more young people should have turned out to ensure a Labour victory. Here’s what Benji Hyer had to say…

Benji's Election Special: Interview with Luke King

This election was all about Brexit, or so Theresa May claimed. But with only a matter of days to go until negotiations are due to begin with the European Union, the UK finds itself leaderless and ungovernable.

The Brexit talks will most probably comprise of lots of process and little substance until the UK can find its feet again. However, despite causing untold political instability, some Leaver voters are still adamant that leaving the EU was the right decision.

Benji Hyer interviewed Leave voter Luke King who admits that calling the election so soon after triggering Article 50 was a foolish mistake by Theresa May, and Brexit cannot go ahead until there is cross-party consensus on the issue.
